The GRE test is a widely used graduate admissions test that is accepted by many graduate schools. There are basically three types of questions in GRE- Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Analytical Writing.

Verbal Reasoning measures your ability to analyze and draw conclusions from written material and to apply reasoning skills. The section consists of two types of questions: Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence. It measures your ability to read and understand written material, identify relationships among words and concepts, and draw logical conclusions.

Quantitative Reasoning measures your ability to analyze quantitative information, solve problems using mathematical models, and interpret graphic data. The section consists of two types of questions: Quantitative Comparison and Multiple Choice. 

Analytical Writing measures your ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively. It measures your ability to think critically and to communicate your ideas effectively in writing. The section consists of two writing tasks: Issue Task and Argument Task.

You will have three hours and 45 minutes to complete the GRE. The Verbal Reasoning section will have two 30-minute sections with 20 questions each.

Format of the Test

The GRE is divided into six sections: a writing section of 60 minutes, which includes an argumentative writing activity and an issue writing task; two verbal reasoning sections of 30 minutes each; two quantitative reasoning sections of 35 minutes each; and one experimental or research segment of 30 or 35 minutes, which may be either verbal or quantitative.

The arrangement of the other five portions can vary, but the writing part is often first. Every portion is followed by an optional one-minute break, and the third section is followed by a longer break of ten minutes. The combined time for the computer and paper tests is roughly 3 hours and 45 minutes.

There are a total of 82 questions in the computer based test, and 102 questions in the paper based test. The 82 questions in the computer based test can be broken down to 20 questions pertaining to verbal reasoning, 20 for quantitative reasoning, and 2 for analytical writing. It also has a variable number of unscored questions.

The questions in the research section are variable. Likewise, the 102 questions in the paper-based test can be categorized to 25 questions on verbal reasoning, 25 on quantitative reasoning, and 2 questions for analytical writing. There are no research or unsecured questions in the paper based test.

Types of Questions in GRE

Verbal Reasoning

There are numerous formats available for verbal reasoning problems. You must read passages and respond to questions about them for half of them. You must read, understand, and finish given sentences, paragraphs, or sets of sentences for the remaining portion. It has three subsections:

Reading Comprehension

Three different types of questions are included in this section. First, the traditional multiple-choice, which requires you to select one from each of the five possible answers. Second, the multiple choice, which requires you to select all of the right answers. And Finally the select-in-passage questions require you to select the passage’s sentence that best fits a given description.

Sentence Equivalence

The questions on sentence equivalency have one sentence, one blank, as well as six possible answers. You must choose two responses that accurately reflect the sentence’s meaning. If just one of the two selected responses is accurate, no points are awarded.

Text Completion

This passage will include 1-5 sentences, 1-3 blanks, and three answer options for each blank. Additionally, choosing one answer option for one blank does not change the answer options available for any subsequent blanks.

Quantitative Reasoning 

This section includes questions of Quantitative Comparison, Multiple-choice questions with only one possible response, Multiple-choice questions selecting one or more answers from a list of options, and finally Numeric entry questions.

Analytical Writing

This section consists of two types of questions. The first is analyzing a task. An issue statement will be presented to the test-taker, followed by a list of detailed instructions for how to respond.

The second is analyzing an argument. You’ll be given a brief excerpt that presents the author’s argument or supported account of the events. It is your responsibility to evaluate the author’s claim’s logical plausibility in light of the provided guidelines.
