The Azad Kashmir Government functions as the independent administrative authority of Azad Jammu and Kashmir with governance structures that differ from those of Pakistan's provinces. AJK holds significant strategic importance due to its geographical location, rich natural resources, and vibrant cultural heritage. This vital development region reaches popularity because it contains vast hydroelectric potential combined with forest resources along with mineral wealth in breathtaking surroundings.
The AJK Interim Constitution Act 1974 establishes separate executive and legislative foundations for the region with additional Pakistani administrative bonds. Development infrastructure alongside education provision, healthcare delivery management of natural resources and tourism promotion both belong to the Azad Kashmir Government which holds primary responsibility for the socio-economic development of the region.
The AJK Legislative Assembly creates laws together with the President who serves as the top constitutional position and the Prime Minister who fulfills executive duties. Numerous departments work alongside the Supreme Court Judiciary to provide legal oversight as the executive functions through the Prime Minister to assist the Assembly in enacting legislation.
Public welfare together with economic growth and sustainability remain the primary focus of AJK government as it advances towards further development.
The Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly maintains principal jurisdiction over policymaking in the region to provide governance for its residents. The assembly consists of 53 total seats that include 45 general representatives selected from members of AJK and Pakistan-based Kashmiri refugees together with special member allocations for women and technocrats and overseas Kashmiris.

The assembly maintains formidable control over regional laws because it creates regulations for fundamental areas including education together with healthcare and tourism as well as natural resource management. The assembly maintains authority to create the yearly budget and validate development plans and manage the governance process in AKJ. Through its functions, the assembly aids in policymaking that directly promotes the socio-economic growth of the region.
Democracy drives the AJK Legislative Assembly because its members get their positions through five-year elected terms during general elections. The assembly meets at Muzaffarabad which is the capital city of AJK to conduct discussions that result in political decisions about legislative matters.
The governing authority of Azad Kashmir depends on the AJK Legislative Assembly to execute its structured approach to policy formation and governing strategies.

The President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) leads the region through their symbolic role while being responsible for representing both the autonomy and symbolic elements of the territory. No other person can perform the duties or functions assigned to the President of the AJK Interim Constitution Act, 1974 throughout a five-year term based on the members' choice from the AJK Legislative Assembly and AJK Council.
Despite minimal executive authority, the President retains critical importance in supporting AJK's political organization together with its constitutional framework. The President of AJK supervises oath-taking ceremonies and legislative proceedings together with performing all state functions required of their position. As the highest representative of AJK the President fulfills two critical functions by leading constitutional matters and enforcing the legal structure of the region.
The President retains executive powers which include the ability to select the Prime Minister as well as ministers and important judicial members such as the Chief Justice and judges from the Supreme Court and High Court of AJK. According to constitutional terms the President is permitted to issue pardons and promulgate laws during periods where the Legislative Assembly is absent.
According to the legal system the President possesses the power to declare an emergency state of emergency when the Chairman of the AJK Council advises such action. The position of President of AJK is currently held by Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry since August 25, 2021.
The Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) functions as the governing executive who directs both governance operations and executes policies throughout the region. The Prime Minister receives his position from elections held within the AJK Legislative Assembly and leads both the executive branch and the AJK Cabinet and develops policies and manages departmental requirements. The Prime Minister supervises important domains comprising development projects alongside tourism education infrastructure and health that must match regional requirements.
The Prime Minister holds the essential position of representing AJK to both Pakistan and international forums by effectively expressing the region's points of view. Through direct provincial department control, the Prime Minister enables efficient program and policy implementation across AJK.
The 15th head of government in AJK is Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq since April 20th 2023. He took over his current position after being the Speaker of the AJK Legislative Assembly. The current administration directs its efforts toward achieving state prosperity by eliminating poverty and managing public resources to maximize benefits for the residents.
The Constitution of AJK establishes a parliamentary system where the Prime Minister leads self-governance with the President playing the role of the constitutional head of state.
