Location & Geography

Aliabad is the commercial and administrative hub of Hunza District. You'll find it right along the Karakoram Highway, making it super easy to reach. The town sits at an elevation of 2,200–2,300 meters. That's about 7,200–7,500 feet above sea level.

 

When you're here, you'll see dramatic mountain views everywhere. Rakaposhi, Golden Peak, and Ultar Sar surround the valley. Aliabad sits in the middle of a long, green valley. Orchards and terraced fields make it incredibly scenic.

It connects lower Hunza with upper Hunza (Gojal). So it's basically the central stop for everyone.

Demographics & Culture

Around 12,000–15,000 people call this town home. Most of them are Burusho people who speak Burushaski. In neighbouring villages, there are smaller groups of speakers of the Wakhi language. The locals are known for their warm hospitality.

 

You'll love the vibrant markets and seasonal produce here. Fresh cherries, apricots, and apples are everywhere in summer.

Administrative Importance

 

Aliabad district serves as the headquarters of Hunza. Government buildings, district offices, and educational centers are all based here. You'll also find the Post Office Aliabad in town. It's a key administrative center for the entire region.

 

Climate & Weather

 

The weather in Aliabad Hunza is pretty mild compared to upper Hunza. Summers range from 16°C to 28°C, perfect for sightseeing.

 

Winters are cold and reach -7 C to -1C. They receive moderate amounts of rainfall (snow). Aliabad weather is stable year-round. That makes it a great stop no matter when you visit.

Connectivity

Getting to Aliabad is easy. It's about 2.5–3 hours from Gilgit City via the Karakoram Highway.

 

From here, you can reach Karimabad, Altit, Nasirabad, and Upper Hunza. It's the central transport point for the whole region.
