Miandam Valley is very appealing with its natural beauty which is beyond words in a dense pine forest, a perfectly cultivated terrace land, and an intimidating snow-clad mountain. The orchards of apple trees are tactically placed at the steep cheapest gradient, with a splendid panoramic view of apple orchards descending into Swat River tributaries on the valley below.
The fresh mountain air and countryside atmosphere allows a wonderful way to get away from the polluted cities and the stress that they bring. In the fall harvest during this time, the valley takes the form of a painter's palette with emerald green pine trees balancing with golden apple trees and red tinged maple trees. There is rich wildlife in the area and clear night skies making the area among the best places in Pakistan to go star-gazing and nature photography.
Pashtun farming families whose generations and generations of families have been growing apples in their apple orchards are the major and primary owners and operators of Miandam apple orchards. The communities hosting the visitors will then offer the total immersion experience by welcoming people to their orchards and sharing traditional tea and local specialties, thus, offering the guests a perfect cultural experience.
Apple farming is also the main livelihood of many local families, and therefore they need tourism support so that communities are sustainable. A number of local guesthouses can be booked where visitors have a more relaxing rural experience in the hands of the locals themselves. Local markets of Miandam and adjoining Mingora offer fresh fruits as well as apple based products, which include traditional preserves and dried fruits and apple juices, produced locally.
Apple picking needs to be well prepared and respectful. Visitors all should be dressed appropriately and comfortable, in weather-appropriate clothes and sturdy walking shoes suitable to uneven orchard ground. One of the key components of the arrangement is to carry reusable bags or baskets to gather the apples picked, and it is important to carry cash as most of these local farms do not support the use of credit cards.
Do not trespass on people’s property, only visit orchards that explicitly agree to receive visitors or have obtained the required permission. Direct payment to farmers maintains traditional livelihoods through support of local communities. Include your Miandam apples experience with a visit to other Swat tourist destinations such as Malam Jabba ski resort, the picturesque town of Madyan, or the wonderful Kalam Valley to get a complete taste of northern Pakistan.
